With approximately 6500 athletes and team officials about to be welcomed to Glasgow along with the media and spectators, what are the implications for Glasgow based businesses and business travellers both inbound and outbound from Scotland’s largest city?
The Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee has been assisting local businesses prepare for the impact of the Games through a number of initiatives. Get Ready Glasgow is not just a key message but also the brand name for the work Glasgow 2014, in conjunction with key government bodies and organisations, to ensure Glasgow remains open for business during Games time.
With a dedicated website (getreadyglasgow.com) and a business enquiry helpline (0141 287 2014), businesses are able to tap into resources such as the ‘Business Ready Guide’, business information sessions and Travel Advice Workshops. In addition to the Get Ready Glasgow website, one of the main sources of information for businesses - and the means by which all Games-related contracts are advertised - is the Glasgow Business Portal.
Planning on travelling to Glasgow for business during Games time?
FCm has consulted with key travel partners to understand the impact on inbound business travel. The majority of our hotel partners are reporting that they are fully booked in Glasgow and surrounding areas during the period of the Games, with Travelodge advising this has also extended to their Edinburgh properties. “A large number of rooms have been contracted for sponsors/organisers”, advises Ruth McPherson, Key Account Manager for Travelodge.
The Marriott have also advised that from 23rd July – 3rd August they are full and anticipate very little availability during the period. Thistle are also warning travellers there will be very little availability for hotels in the city with their own property already full. They have the contract for the Timekeepers accommodation.
It’s a different story at 30,000 feet with Qantas, British Airways and Etihad all saying they have as yet seen no spike in bookings and have no current plans to add extra services, however may shift to larger aircraft if necessary.
Virgin, bmi and Air New Zealand have all advised they are not planning to do anything differently during the Games period and expect little impact.
